Music Magazine Research

What genre of music are you going to use?
The genre of my music magazine will be Indie Rock. I have chose this because I feel that I can do my best work with these genres as it is my personal music choice and something I feel that I can provide alot of knowledge and background information on. Also I think that this genre is very interesting and is the base for a lot of the media attention and the contemporary 'in' trend of magazine and fashion as well.

What media exists for this genre currently?
This genre is very popular currently especially in music, the main magazine that is well known  for its Indie genre is 'NME'.

This magazine brings the latest news and reviews on music and concerts. It has been running for over 58 years and is a big hit in the media in terms of popularity with its target audience.
NME has become a truly unique multi-platform media proposition. Across the magazine, nme.com, NMETV, NME Radio and the brand's live events and awards, NME reaches over one million music fans every week. It is the longest published and most respected music weekly in the world. Every week it gives its readers the most exciting, most authoritative coverage of the very best in contemporary music, including award winning features, the latest releases, live reviews as well as its regular look back to its own history.

NME also has a radio station which has been very popular  although it has only been around a couple of years, beginning in 2008.

As well as also having a major official website that is viewed by its fans etc.

Other media that is currently a huge contribution to the popularity of the genre Indie is the huge appeal of the fashion style that is very popular and through other magazines on fashion etc. this is shown. Festival fashions is hugely made up of Indie styles especially at festivals such as Glastonbury, Isle of Wight festival and Bestival.
There are also many other music magazines focused on the Indie genre, but NME still remains the most popular with many awards to go with it.

Who produces these?
IPC are the producer of the media brand NME, including the magazine, radio station and the website. IPC as I looked into detail in the case study earlier in my work.
IPC also produce many other music magazines and radio stations such as..

What is Typically included in the current publications?
In NME every week the issues include The weeks top 20, a Gig guide, crossword puzzle and a few pages of the weeks news. The rest of the magazine features a range of interviews and reviews.

How much does it cost? How often is it published? How many pages does it have?
NME is usually £2.30 although on special editions such as the Christmas issue is a little more expensive at £2.80. It is published on a weekly basis and includes on average about 65 pages in each edition.

Who is it aimed at?
I would say that NME's target audience would be teenagers for males and females, the main audience type would be for people who enjoy listening to Indie Rock music.
The editor's opinion the target audience age wise was ages 16-19.

How successful are they?
NME is very successful eraching over 1million music fans every week. The fact that it has been running for over 58 years says it all. It also has the awards to go with it. The route of their  success would have to be with their ability to reach their target audience perfectly.
Even the website has had huge success as abc.org.uk has helped me to show below..

What are they called?
NME is the music magazines name and it stands for new musical express. I think they are called this  because it suits the magazine as it brings a weekly regular update of new music and even the top 20 to its customers as it expresses on its name but has a double meaning as when you read it out 'NME' it sounds like 'enemy' which is quirky and suggests a very competitive element to the magazine.

What/who is on the cover? What kind or shot is it? What is the person doing?

On this cover Alex Turner and Miles Kane feature on the front they are back to back wearing matching outfits and look very similar including their make up. Their pose is very plain but strong as they have a very dull and mysterious expression whilst staring at the camera.

On this cover Biffy Clyro is very close to the camera facing left but has turned his head to look towards the camera. His eyes are very wide and he looks very dark, with his piercing eyes and plain expression (a look that seems to be popular with this magazine and therefore the Inide Rock genre). His tattoo's are showing as his arm is raised into the shot, this makes him seem daring.

This is my favourite magazine cover that I have seen so far as the three band members from the Killers and look like they are having fun bar one in the middle who looks very serious. NME once again have decided to dress them the same but in this photo they have had separate photo's taken and edited together. This has given me a few ideas and is a possibility that I will be doing something similar to this.
